Eric Zwiebel MS, cellar master at Summer Lodge in Dorest, has been selected by the Academy of Food & Wine Service to take on the famously fierce competition at the Best Sommelier in the World final in Tokyo, next month.
The previous winner of Moët UK Sommelier of the Year, Zwiebel has previously competed on behalf of his native France, but this will be his first time playing for Team GB.
The competition was most recently held in 2010, when victory famously belonged to Gérard Basset MW OBE – winning on his sixth attempt at the competition.
Basset said of Zwiebel’s selection, ‘ He is a very thorough and also a very determined sommelier, a great competitor and someone who works hard to prepare. He has a great chance to do well and, perhaps win, too.
‘Competing in the Best Sommelier of the World is very thrilling and exciting. The competitors are high on adrenaline and being in the final – one of only three people from over 50 – is an amazing experience.’
So, wishing Eric the best of British, from all at Imbibe!
