Six of London’s finest have won a trip round the iconic port vineyards of Taylor’s, Croft and Fonseca in a testing competition run by The Fladgate Partnership with agents Mentzendorff.

Announced at the East India Club in early April, the 2010 Port Bursary winners – Luis Miguel Moreno Perez (Caledonian Club), Damien Bouchaneau (Goring Hotel), Pauline Lardeux (The Garrick), Magdalena Kotlarczyk (East India Club), Kryzysztof Stroninski (National Liberal Club) and Thomas Sorcinelli (The Ritz) – could find themselves treading the grapes when they head out in mid-September as well as visiting the lodges and tasting the different ports.

Run every two years for the London on-trade, entrants had to answer questions on production, port styles and how best to serve port following a port masterclass back in October.

Judges were particularly impressed with the creativity of the food matches, For example, Magdalena Kotlarczyk suggested maple walnut pie with coffee ice cream or a Pyrenean sheeps’ milk hard rough cheese Ossau-Iraty Brebis to go with 10 year-old tawny.

The quality of entries were so high that the judges awarded six rather than four bursaries.
