Congratulations to Terry Kandylis from The Ledbury, who won the UK heat of the 2013 Wines of South Africa Sommelier Cup earlier this week. The competition saw sommeliers from around the country battle it out for a chance to represent the UK in the international final which will be held in Cape Town in October.
Judges Greg Sherwood MW of Handford Wines, Jo Wehring, UK marketing manager for WOSA and Alan Holmes of The Vineyard at Stockcross (UK winner of the 2010 competition) oversaw the three-part competition. It consisted of a free-pour tasting with food matching, a questionnaire about the South African wine industry, and a panel interview covering the role of Cape wines in the on-trade.
‘It was a tightly fought competition at the top and very close. We were so impressed with the high standard of the entrants,’ commented Wehring.
‘Terry instilled great confidence with his food and wine matching and offered alternatives that were fairly inspired. His knowledge of South African wine and its regions was credible and fairly diverse and above all, he showed a great potential to apply his current knowledge as well as any further experience he would gain from a visit to South Africa. A worthy winner,’ added Sherwood.
Runners-up were Jeremy Cadiere from Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons and Adam Pawlowski from Northcote.
