Ex-Tom Aikens sommelier Gearoid Devaney MS has joined independent merchant Flint Wines to boost the company’s fledgling business with restaurants. Flint co-founders Jason Haynes and Sam Clarke believe the appointment of master sommelier Devaney to head the company’s restaurant division will be crucial to its future growth.
‘I’ve been approached by various merchants over the past couple of years, but never been tempted,’ Devaney said. ‘However, the opportunity to join Flint was too good to miss and came at a time when I was looking for a new challenge.’ Devaney added that there were ‘no weak links’ in the Flint list, which has a strong leaning towards the wines of Burgundy and the Rhône.
He said of Haynes and Clarke: ‘They know Burgundy inside out and trust their instincts in spotting the next generation of talented producers, which means alongside the famous names, of which they have plenty, they have some great-value wines which overperform massively.
‘And there’s no Pinotage gathering dust under the stairs!’
