Say what you will about the representation of women in the drinks industry, but there are certain fields where a little help won’t go amiss in helping to boost their presence.

So Imbibe was pleased to hear that Stellenbosch-based wine producer Jordan has announced plans for a new programme to sponsor and mentor women in the UK and South African wine industries.

In the UK, the Jordan Wine Estate ‘Women in Wine’ Initiative will take the top female graduate from Plumpton College and provide a bursary for a two-month trip to South Africa on a harvest internship at Jordan.

On the South African side, a previously disadvantaged candidate with a background in marketing or journalism will be sponsored through the Wine and Spirit Education Trust Levels 1 to 3, with a view to moving into wine journalism or wine marketing.

Unveiling the initiative in London yesterday, Jordan Wine Estate co-owner Kathy Jordan said, ‘On the tail of all the successes that Jordan Wine Estate has received over the past two years, we want to reciprocate by launching two initiatives to support and encourage women to enter the wine industry.’
