As Portuguese wines sales to the UK double in value, don’t miss the Annual Tasting of Portuguese Wines next week in London.
Entitled ‘A World of Difference’, the tasting will be held at Lord’s Cricket Ground on Wednesday 2 March. Producers from all of the country’s wine regions will be in attendance.
In addition, there will be fifteen minute short-burst tastings from noon, every hour on the hour, highlighting different regions and the diversity of wine styles within each region. They will be hosted by leading Portuguese winemakers: Luis Pato (Bairrada), Cristiano Van Zeller (Douro), David Baverstock of Esporão (Alentejo), and Vasco Magalhães of Sogrape (Vinho Verde), as well as Trevor Elliott, author of a new book on Madeira, who will invite you to taste wines from this intriguing island.
Similarly, wine writers Charles Metcalfe and Tom Cannavan will be hosting wine walks around the tasting, sharing their extensive knowledge of the country’s wines.
As the reputation for Portuguese wines to match all styles of cuisine continues to impress, and as Portugal increasingly focuses its efforts on the on-trade, now is a perfect time to embrace these versatile wines. A greater focus on the UK market recently has resulted in an increase in export value of 99.1%, with volume up 22.5% (between January and November 2010, compared to the same period in 2009, according to the National Statistics Institute of Portugal).Online registration for the tasting.
