Les Vignobles Foncalieu in southern France has been focussing on the top end, investing in a new wing of its winery dedicated to a range of four Grands Vins.
The cooperative’s president, Michel Bataille, along with 15 winegrowers, embarked on a programme to improve quality, with work being done both in the vineyards and in the winery, from canopy management and sorting, to new winemaking equipment.
The four Grands Vins (all £20 RRP) include three single-varietal Syrahs -Le Lien from Minervois, Apogée from AOC Saint-Chinian and La Lumière from AOC Corbières. The fourth, Les Illustres from VDP Coteaux d’Ensérune is a blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Syrah, 10% Merlot and 10% Marselan.
Imbibe had a preview of the recently-bottled 2010 vintage of Apogee, with its concentrated hit of berry sauce, whiff of perfume, and just a bit of smokiness – a big and characterful food-friendly wine.City Beverage, 020 7729 2111
