Spare a thought for England’s winemakers. Less than ideal weather conditions this summer look likely to result in lower yields this year.

Last year’s harvest for England and Wales produced enough for 3m bottles, compared with 2010’s 4m bottle harvest.

‘Such variable weather really makes it too early to predict for certain how the harvest will turn out,’ said Chapel Down CEO Frazer Thompson, ‘but it could be a lot worse and its conditions like these where the vineyard managers use their skills to counter the effects of the weather.’
