Official Selection of Crus Bourgeois du Médoc 2015 revealed

Drinks: Wines
Location: France

The blind tasting has been done, the region’s best wines have been selected, and the Alliance des Crus Bourgeois du Médoc can now reveal 2015’s Official Selection – all 32 million bottles of it.

This is the 8th annual selection, and covers 271 Crus Bourgeois du Médoc, about 31% of the region’s production. It covers Médoc, Haut-Médoc, Listrac-Médoc, Moulis, Margaux, Pauillac and Saint Estèphe. The selection, marketed over the coming months, can be spotted by an authentication sticker on each bottle, each uniquely numbered.

According to the Alliance, 2015 is considered to be the best vintage since 2010, with a temperate August following a hot and dry July. The 32 million bottles selected from 2015 is as many as the largest selections in the past, in 2009 and 2010, and is up from 30 million in last year’s 2014 selection.

‘Thanks to the vineyards’ location on superb terroirs, and the rigorous quality process in which the wines are selected in blind tastings every year, the Crus Bourgeois du Médoc are always able to uphold their promise of guaranteeing quality at accessible prices,’ explained Olivier Cuvelier, president of the Alliance des Crus Bourgeois du Médoc.

The process for properties applying for recognition in this scheme is indeed a rigorous one. A representative selection for each vintage is determined through blind tasting, which is then used as a reference point for judges when blind tasting and scoring submitted wines. If a wine’s average score is equal or greater than the representative sample, it’s recognised as Cru Bourgeois.

Fancy tasting them for yourself? Head to The British Academy (10-11 Carlton House Terrace) tomorrow, 21 September, for an all-day free-pour trade tasting of 189 of the wines.
