Coonawarra winery Reschke is targeting the UK trade with boutique wines that aim to stand out in a ‘sea of high production’ that has flooded the market.
Australia is by far and away the largest country of origin supplying the UK, with brands like Hardys, McGuigan, Wolf Blass and Jacob’s Creek enjoying huge sales.
But Reschke is trying to offer something different and showcase premium Australian offerings that are aged and showcase the Coonawarra terroir.
‘These wines will stand out in the UK market, alongside the sea of high production, modern wines, due to their modest price, traditional style and the extent that they are already aged,’ managing director Burke Reschke told Imbibe.
‘Reschke likes to reveal some of the wines potential by releasing them with some of the age that make the wines more sophisticated and elegant. This is a small sample of the portfolio of Reschke wines but they have been hand selected to represent value at different price points.’
Reschke has teamed up with London-based distributor The Vintner to target the on-trade.
‘The Vintner prides itself on selling wines only when they are ready to drink and in their optimum drinking window,’ said its wine buyer, Gavin Smith. ‘It is a great opportunity for us to offer wines from Australia that are beautifully aged and showing the full capacity of what can be achieved in Coonawarra.’
A key selection of wines from Reschke’s portfolio that will be available in the UK from May include Empyrean 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon, Vitulus Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 and Bull Trader Cabernet Merlot 2008.
‘I produce traditional Cabernets, intense in flavour, that age elegantly,’ said Burke Reschke. ‘These wines go exceptionally well with food and therefore the UK premium restaurant market is key for us.
‘The Vintner shows a promising and dynamic range of on-trade clients, as well as having a highly professional and passionate team that the wines deserve.’
