Sparkler on-trade sales continue to soar

Sparkling wine sales in the UK are higher than ever, as fizz grew a further 12% last year.

According to figures released by the Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA), sales of sparkling wine and champagne have soared by 72% since 2012 and are now up from 112 million bottles to around 156 million.

In the on-trade, sparkler sales increased 18% in volume and 7% in value last year, bringing the total number to just under 24m bottles worth £485 million.

“Our Wine Report for 2017 shows that Brits’ thirst for sparkling wine continues to grow, and also underlines the value of the wine trade to the UK economy, not to mention the enormous tax contribution our industry makes to the Treasury’s coffers,’ WSTA chief executive, Miles Beale, said.
Overall, the UK is the sixth largest sparkling wine market in the world, and the largest market for champagne outside of France. Blighty can also pat itself on the back for being the largest export market for Italian sparkling wine by both volume and growth.
‘Over two thirds of UK trade in wine is with the EU, and the question of how to keep the UK at the heart of the world wine trade post-Brexit is key if we want to see continued growth in years to come,’ Beale added.

‘The WSTA view is crystal clear. Brexit negotiations must avoid disruption to existing trade, a view that is strongly supported by our colleagues in the EU wine and spirit trade. We are working together to forge a plan that keeps our historic trade flows intact, regardless of any posturing – either in Westminster or Brussels.’

The WSTA’s Wine Report features a snapshot of recent consumer polling carried out by the association.
