Stellenrust fought off sparkling wine competition from around the world yesterday to take top spot in the Little Bedwyn World Sparkling Wine Challenge, held at The Harrow at Little Bedwyn.
The South African winery’s winning wine, Clement de Lure Brut NV, finished in front of 42 other sparkling wines. These were all tasted blind, with no pricing information.
Overall, South Africa took four of the top ten places, as did France, with three of those places going to the best house on the day, Charles Heidsieck. England’s winemakers claimed two of the top ten sports.
High Timber’s Neleen Strauss, representing South Africa at the event, collected the winning decanter on Stellenrust’s behalf. The Harrow’s Roger and Sue Jones plan to hand deliver it to winemaker Tertius Boshoff in January.
This is just one of four annual wine events run by The Harrow at Little Bedwyn. They also organise a Tri Nations Challenge, held in both Cape Town and Little Bedwyn, pitting South African, New Zealand and Australia against each other. In addition, July’s Mama Riedel Decanter Awards highlight premium Australian wines at Little Bedwyn. The proceeds from the UK-based events go to drinks industry charity The Benevolent.
