Wine merchant SWiG has signed up as exclusive UK importer for Blaufränkisch specialist Groszer Wein, based in the Südburgenland region of Austria.

austrian wine Established in 2012, Groszer Wein focuses on ‘distinctive’ wines from indigenous variety Blaufränkisch, grown in the green slate soils of the Eisenberg hill, and is now releasing its fifth vintage.

Run by CEO Matthias Krön with winemaker Markus Bach and viticulturist Antonia Voit, the winery grows most of its grapes on the Eisenberg, with other indigen

ous varieties such as Zweigelt grown in the more iron-rich clay soils of the nearby Kulm and Königsberg.

The Eisenberg’s soils give the company’s wines ‘precision, minerality and radiant fruit’, helped by the area’s cooler nights and combination of extreme continental and milder Mediterranean climatic influences.

Bach uses traditional techniques, including wild yeast fermentation and slow ageing in neutral, large-format oak, and the hand-cultivated vineyards are working towards organic certification.

‘I was bowled over tasting Groszer Wein’s range of Blaufränkisch – stylistically they are unique,’ said Robin Davis, owner of SWiG Wines. ‘They will provide excitement and intrigue to advanced wine drinkers, but also will be fun to more regular consumers on the hunt for something different.’

Groszer Wein’s range, including single vineyard, village and regional wines, will feature at the Austrian tasting at the Institute of Directors in London next 5 Monday February, from 10.30am to 5pm.
