The Ruinart Sommelier Challenge opens for entries

Sommeliers are invited to enter The Ruinart Sommelier Challenge 2018, with the top prize a four-day educational trip to Champagne with Ruinart chef de caves Frédéric Panaïotis.

Thirty places are available at the seminar and blind tasting competition at 67 Pall Mall in London on Monday, 9 April, which will be hosted by Panaïotis, Ronan Sayburn MS and Xavier Rousset MS.

Previously known as Ateliers Ruinart, the competition will take place in 11 countries this year, with the winners spending four days in the Champagne region.

They will undertake an in-depth study of the Champagne terroir, visiting experimental vineyards planted by generic body the CIVC, focusing on sustainability and attending Blanc de Blancs blind tastings, as well as visiting Grandes Marques houses and small growers.

The UK seminar and competition aims to explore technical aspects of champagne winemaking, as well as choosing the winning sommelier from the 30 entrants, with the three hosts acting as the judging panel.

Last year’s winner, Julia Sewell of The Fat Duck, said: ‘The Ruinart Sommelier Challenge seminar was reason enough to enter the competition – insightful, informative and engaging,’ adding that the trip to Champagne had been ‘the most rewarding experience’.
