With a little help from my Margarita

My Friends Margarita - Kurt Schlechter

The inaugural Olmeca Margarita Contest was recently held by the Tahona Society, with a bartender from South Africa taking top honours.

The competition was held on the roof terrace of Mexico City’s Habita hotel, consisting of nine finalists from around the world. Kurt Schlechter, from Bartender's Workshop, won with his My Friends Margarita, which combined Mexican elements such as jicama fruit, with a South African ingredient – a salt that included local citrus fruit, the naartjie.

Mexico’s Raymundo Cazarin took second place, with Seyran Gevorkyan from Russia in third. The UK was represented by Green & Red’s Christian Gaskell.

The judging panel consisted of Tomas Estes, the European Ambassador for Tequila, Henry Besant, co-creator of Olmeca Altos, Jesús Hernández, Olmeca master distiller, and Alberto Navarro, Olmeca’s head of brand education.

The nine contestants enjoyed a week learning about tequila in the state of Jalisco before the final of the comp. Schlechter’s prize is a trip to New York, where he will serve his Margarita at Mayahuel.
