Shaka Zulu launch
The Zulu king paid a visit to Camden market this week to attend the opening of South African restaurant Shaka Zulu – a 27,000 sq ft venue in Stables Market. His Majesty King Goodwill Zwelithini and his wife Queen Mantfombi may well have been the only royals in the room but the celebs were plentiful, with Sophie Anderton and local Camdenite Amy Winehouse enjoying the likes of zebra canapes and Stellenbosch rose among the tribal prints.
Carved wooden doors lead the way into the bar and lounge area, where further hand carved walls and murals depicting cultural scenes from the Zulu nation provide a atmospheric backdrop for those keen to make their way through the largest choice of South African wines in the UK. Bottles (and glasses) on offer include those from Graham Beck, Saam Mountain, Kloovenburg and Newton Johnson.
The cocktail list nods towards old classics with a zulu twist - think added bitters, zest and tropical fruit.
Cape Town chef Barry Vera is heading up the kitchen and serving up all types of exotic meats – seared ostrich, kudu and springbook – in the expansive 840-seater restaurant.
Shaka Zulu has pledged $1 from each meal sold to Education Africa – a charity that helps to provide schooling and healthcare to some of Africa´s poorest children. For more information visit the Shaka Zulu website
