Pulling punches during Cocktail Week

Momma's Hot Apple Pie Courvoisier Exclusif

Courvoisier’s commitment to punch continues in October with a series of free events.

At the centre of this activity is The Courvoisier Spirit of Punch Seminar, hosted by Gary Regan. In addition to some historical information, Regan will apparently be bringing out some old-school punches for sampling, most notably Eliza Smith’s Cock Ale Punch (circa 1742), which really contains chicken. More contemporary (and presumably poultry-free) recipes by Saf’s Joe McCanta will also be shown.

The event will be followed by a punch competition, with pairs of bartenders competing against each other, being judged on factors such as taste, presentation, creative vessel, revolutionary ingredients and historical reference. Winners will be flown to next year’s Tales of the Cocktail in New Orleans to present their punch there.

'I think that punch made a comeback at exactly the right time. This is a time when people are rediscovering a sense of community and a flowing bowl of punch is a perfect panacea for like-minded folk to share,' commented Regan.

The event will take place at The Future Gallery, London WC2H 7JB on Wednesday 13 October. The seminar will run from 12-3pm, with the competition following immediately afterwards until 8pm. To attend or get involved, email Ben Leggett.

Also Courvoisier punch-related and at the The Future Gallery: an evening of punch on Monday 11 October, and a New Orleans themed evening of live music on Tuesday 12 October. Both are hosted by Tim Fitz-Gibbon, the owner of Oxford bar Raoul's. More information on Courvoisier’s Facebook page.
