The mysteriously named Holodny Yar is a new grain vodka from Ukraine which aims to uphold the flavoursome Eastern European style of vodka distilling. The story for this one is the water, which comes from the ultra-pure underground lakes of a 250km-wide meteor crater known as Holodny Yar – or ‘Cold Ravine’. Distilled at the Kosarskyi Distillery, founded in 1872, Holodny Yar will be available in three varieties in the UK – Premium, Standard and Lux, ranging from £12-£26/70cl. We tried the Standard, a delicate pouring vodka with some grainy sweetness up front, leading to a pure and clean midpalate, and a slightly spicy finish. Good luck reading the label!
