New thread: Desmond Payne on Gin
I have to say I agree completely with Desmond on this issue. I think its just plain lazy. Seems strange to me that it is only now when gin is' hot' that all these weird and wonderful manifestations of gin are coming to market. To me it reeks of commercial opportunism rather than innovation. A way to save marketing dollars by attempting to stand out from the crowd, rather than sincere attempts to create something truly innovative within the gin arena. I suspect that if it were rum that was seen as ‘hot’ and a licence to print money then we'd be seeing dozens of weird and wonderful rums coming to market. Its the whole ridiculous vodka madness all over again. With vodka it was distillation idiocy,' fifteen times distilled on virgins thighs' etc. etc. Now its ‘unique botanicals’. Its the crafting and balance practised by Desmond and his like that define great spirits not fancy packs and weird flavourings. Go ahead and make these drinks. Some of them even taste quite good. But they don't taste like gin, so don't describe them as such. More
