In order to be eligible for the competition, sommeliers must commit to being available on the following dates:
- 24 April: Regional finals
- 22 & 23 June: Taittinger trip
- 6 July: Preliminary semi-finals
- 20 July: Semi-final & finals
Furthermore, entrants are asked to be nominated by their employer or manager, submit a copy of their CV, and explain – in no more than 200 words – why they've chosen the sommelier profession, their greatest wine experience to date, and what winning would mean to them.
Participating sommeliers are judged on their wine and drink knowledge, as well as on their service skills.
Past winners include Nicolas Clerc MS, Ronan Sayburn MS, Xavier Rousset MS, and last year's Taittinger Sommelier of the Year Romain Bourger, head sommelier at The Vineyard Hotel in Berkshire.
