This is a story that really deserves a Hollywood film – or a Netflix mini-series at the very least. Picture this: years ago, as the diamond rush brought plenty of people to South Africa, wise minds came up with the idea of a European-style vermouth made with South African fynbos. People drank it, loved it, drank some more… and then its maker went bust and it disappeared.
Fast-forward to the present, when legendary winemaker Adi Badenhorst and business partner Lars Erik Lyndgaard Schmidt started playing around with Chenin Blanc, fynbos, satsumas, roiboos and tons of other things… until the glory of Caperitif was found again. Now it can be found on your back bar, too.
On 6 July, join Badenhorst, Lyndgaard Schmidt and the Swig team for a trade tasting of Caperitif and Swaan Cape Tonic Water, the tonic they've also created. Brighton Gin will also be on hand in case you want to try the tonic in a G&T.
Cocktails will be served, along with some of Badenhorst's new limited-release wines:
AA Badenhorst John Strikes Again NV 37.5cl
AA Badenhorst Palamino 2015
AA Badenhorst Brak-Kuil Barbarossa 2015
AA Badenhorst Ramnasgras Cinsault 2015
You can RSVP to Damon at Swig.
As for what we thought of Caperitif... Its complex aromas show anise, some fruit and spice, leading into a light palate with juicy citrus, herbal dryness and a clove finish. You can also taste at Imbibe Live on stand E43.
