Bartender embarks on Olympic-style cachaça crusade

03 August 2016

One London bartender has been embracing the spirit of Brazil in a slightly different way. Yesterday, Fabiano Latham, bar manager of Chotto Matte Soho, embarked on a mini marathon to source the finest cachaça cocktail recipes from some of the capital's best bars.

Armed with an Olympic torch sized cocktail shaker, the half Brazilian, half English bartender was going for gold as he pounded the pavements, stopping by 19 of London's cocktail bars.

Drinks recipes from some of the city's top bartenders were collected and stored in the makeshift torch, before being sent back to Bar Astor, a cocktail bar on Rio’s Leblon Beach. The event was made possible by a sponsorship rivalling Nike: Sagatiba.

Bar Astor will use the recipes from Latham's cachaça crusade to curate a special drinks menu for Olympic Games fans throughout August.

Speaking before the task, Latham said: 'Four years ago there was a great buzz around London's bars when the games were here. While it is more of a marathon than a hop, skip and a jump, collecting these recipes in my Sagatiba torch is going to be a lot of fun, but no doubt exhausting.  I hope to pass on some of the energy we all felt in 2012 to our friends in Rio through these fantastic cachaça recipes.'

Bars visited by Latham were:
– Floripa
– Cotton's Rhum Shack
– Flight Club
– Made in Brasil
– Made in Brasil Boteco
– The Churchill Bar
– Sanderson Hotel
– Barrio Soho
– Hakkasan
– Ronnie Scott's
– Cabana Covent Garden
– The Globe Tavern
– Ev Bar
– Cabana Brixton
– Courtesan
– Black Roe
– Pix Pintxos
– Chotto Matte
– The Shrub and Shutter

If bar crawling was an Olympic sport, we're sure he'd be taking home the gold.
