Marking World Mental Health Day, industry charity The Benevolent has launched its first set of recommendations for supporting the mental health of the industry’s employees.

The recommendations include giving employees mental-health tool kits in their work induction packs, implementing flexible hours and conducting work-related stress assessments.

A number of companies in the industry are partnering with The Benevolent to endorse the new directives (see box-out for full list). In addition, The Benevolent has released case studies from Heineken and St Austell Brewery to provide examples of best practice.

‘The level of support from the industry this year has been incredible,’ said The Benevolent CEO Chris Porter.

‘I am so pleased that we are seeing engagement in words now begin to translate into action. It is further proof of the commitment to addressing the daily issues faced by our colleagues, who no longer need suffer in silence, without anywhere to turn to or feeling isolated. The stigma is gradually being lifted and the conversation is opening.’

The new recommendations stem from a report released by the charity earlier this year which outlined mental-health issues within the trade, and they follow the launch of The Benevolent’s first mental health campaign #NotAlone. In August, The Benevolent also announced the extension of its support network across the UK.
