Biondi Santi switches from Pol Roger to Liberty

Top Montalcino estate Biondi Santi has switched UK distribution from Pol Roger portfolio to Liberty Wines with immediate effect.

The change for the family-owned, 19th-century Italian estate comes after the Descours family, owner of Charles Heidsieck Champagne (also distributed by Liberty), acquired a majority stake in Biondi Santi at the end of 2016.

Sixth-generation family member Jacopo Biondi Santi and his son Tancredi remain actively involved in running the vineyards and winemaking, with the family retaining a minority interest in the company.

The 150-hectare (ha) Biondi Santi estate includes 26ha of vineyards on three sites – including Il Greppo, at 500m above sea level – next to the winery and house, including the oldest plot, planted in 1936; plus vines to the east of Montalcino and to the north, close to Montosoli.

The oldest vineyards (25 years-plus) provide fruit for Biondi Santi’s Brunello Riserva, while those between 10 and 25 years are used for the Brunello ‘Annata’, with the youngest vines (less than 10 years) reserved for the estate’s Rosso di Montalcino bottling.

‘Biondi Santi is an exciting addition to our Tuscan portfolio, complementing our existing Brunello producers Costi Costanti, San Polo and Fossacolle, and strengthening our offering from Montalcino,’ said Liberty MD David Gleave MW.

‘Their wines are already among the very best in Montalcino, and we’re convinced that – given what we’ve seen at Charles Heidsieck – the backing of Christopher Descours will ensure the property modernises in an intelligent manner and the wines will get even better over the next few years.’

Liberty will offer three wines from Biondi Santi:

  • Brunello di Montalcino ‘Annata’ 2012 (from mid-January, RRP £145)
  • Brunello di Montalcino Riserva 2011 (from mid-January, RRP £440)
  • Rosso di Montalcino 2015 (from late summer, RRP TBC)
