Chicago craft distiller Koval will soon be available in the UK via Emporia Brands. Not only will a number of the distillery’s unusual line up of whiskeys be making their way to our shores, but Koval Dry Gin will be making its UK debut too.
Koval was set up by husband-and-wife team Robert and Sonat Birnecker in 2008, making it Chicago’s first distillery to be launched since the mid-1800s. The whiskey range is characterised by some unexpected mash bills. Take Koval Millet, for example, made entirely from that grain, resulting in a bright, fresh and lively whiskey.
The distillery’s 100% rye is also coming to the UK, with plenty of distinctive spiciness. The bourbon is made of the requisite 51% corn, as well as 49% millet, bottled at 47% abv. There are also plans to introduce Koval’s excellent Four Grain later in the year.
‘We’re thrilled to be expanding our international distribution efforts to the United Kingdom and look forward to working with Emporia’s innovative team,’ said Robert Birnecker.
‘Emporia Brands is delighted to announce our partnership with a true craft champion, Koval. Robert and Sonat’s huge passion is reflected in our team, and we look forward to hosting Robert’s nationwide masterclasses throughout April,’ added Jack Rackham, commercial director of Emporia Brands.
Koval joins a portfolio at Emporia that includes brands such as The Irishman whiskey, Chairman’s Reserve Rum and Casco Viejo Tequila. The distillery's range very nearly joined Identity Drinks Brands last year, but stock issues apparently prevented the deal from materialising.
