In a move to make payments more seamless while reducing single-use waste, Costa Coffee has partnered with Barclaycard to introduce a reusable coffee cup containing contactless technology.

Dubbed the Clever Cup, the new product was designed with a detachable silicon base that houses a contactless chip powered by Barclaycard’s bPay technology. The chip is linked to the bPay app, which allows users to track their spending, top up their balance or block payments.

The cup can be used in any store that takes contactless, so you can get your flat white fix in other cafes, too.

‘Contactless technology has become increasingly prominent in our daily lives,’ commented Costa Coffee managing director Jason Cotta.

‘Through the launch of the Clever Cup, we hope to appeal to those tech-savvy customers to help facilitate and drive environmentally friendly behaviour.’

Costa is rolling out the contactless reusable cup at its stores this month at a price of £14.99. The Costa Foundation will receive £1 of each purchase to support coffee-growing communities in poverty.
