Dazzler launches Men United campaign for Prostate UK

Darts legend and TV commentator Bobby ‘Dazzler’ George launched this year’s Men United campaign for Prostate UK on the first day of the 2017 Great British Beer Festival at Olympia, London.

Calling on pubs to transform themselves in Men United locals for anything from days to months, the charity is seeking to raise both awareness and serious funds for further research into the condition – £250,000 is the target.

‘Everyone can do something', George said, who got involved in the campaign when asked by his friend, the dancer Wayne Sleep, himself a survivor.

‘Raise some money and enjoy yourselves while you do it,’ George added, suggesting a few darts fundraisers to kick things off, including the highest scorer playing against other pubs, and playing for pints.

Those signing up get a kit complete with bunting, beer mats and other POS, plus Quiz Night guidelines. The campaign runs until the end of March 2018, with the pubs involved having a chance to win the title of Prostate Cancer’s favourite local.

Judged by an expert industry panel, the competition includes a number of categories, including the highest fundraiser and the most innovative event.

‘Pubs are all about the community. Every community has people who have prostate cancer,’ said Mike Tye, former CEO of Spirit Group, and one of the key instigators behind the campaign. Beginning in 2015, 2016 saw hundreds of pubs sign up, £90,000 raised, and The Par Inn in South Cornwall winning the ‘favourite local’ title.

With one man dying from prostate cancer in the UK every 45 minutes, black men twice as likely to succumb, and the condition likely to become the most diagnosed cancer by 2030, the charity has launched its Tame Prostate Cancer in 10 Years campaign.

‘The word cancer is the devil,’ said George. ‘The message? Go and test yourself. Catch it early. Men are more shy, but it’s just a blood test, and then you have an idea. Look out for the little man.’
