Diageo opens entries for World Class 2019

You’ve been waiting with baited breath, and the moment has finally arrived – the 11th-annual Diageo Reserve World Class Bartender of the Year competition has opened for entries.

You’ve likely had your eye on the competition’s spoils since Daniel Warren was crowned World Class GB champion last year, before he narrowly missed out to Australia's Orlando Marzo in the global final.

But just in case you need reminding of the champion's glamourous prize package, Imbibe is here to help. The lucky winner will get the chance to tour with the World Class team, visits to Diageo-owned distilleries, swanky Cocktail Kingdom kit and a guest bartending shift at one of Europe’s best bars – not to mention an eye-watering amount of PR attention and the opportunity to compete at this year's international final in Glasgow.

In the initial online entry stage of the competition, bartenders are tasked with creating serves around two themes, both of which featured as modules in the World Class Studios tour earlier this year.

For ‘The Science of Smoke’, entrants must create a highball serve that reflects their bar or their geographical location. The drink must use at least 30ml of Johnnie Walker Black Label whisky and include a pre-smoked ingredient.

‘Tech Tonics’ also asks bartenders to develop a highball serve, this one utilising at least 30ml of Tanqueray No Ten and soda, along with botanical combinations and flavours inspired by the distillation process of the gin.

Bartenders can create serves for one or both briefs – and who wouldn’t want to double their chances at advancing to the next round?

From these entries, 100 bartenders will be selected to take part in the in-bar judging. This round will see participants crafting serves with the theme ‘Tartan Tiki’, using Talisker in a tiki-style cocktail with British flavours.

Twenty competitors will go on to take part in the GB World Class Bartender of the Year comp in June.
