It's safe to say we all leave RumFest wanting to jump on a flight to the Caribbean. Well, two bartenders left winning exactly that, courtesy of Doorly's Rum.
The inaugural Doorly's Rum cocktail competition final was held on the last day of this year's RumFest, drawing in entries from all over the UK, from the north of Scotland to Guernsey.
Winning an all-expenses paid trip to Barbados was the Cocktail Trading Co's Sam Ameye and Luke Riley of Newcastle's Popolo, who both created an original rum cocktail inspired by the Foursquare Distillery's ethos of simplicity.
Winning with his Ragged Point, Ameye's creation mixed 40ml of Doorly's 5yo with a homemade shrub soda containing dates, pomegranate and mango, white vinegar and demerara sugar. Riley's The Golden Macaw combined 45ml of Doorly's 3yo with Yellow Chartreuse, apricot falernum, coconut water and absinthe mist.
Making the call was Richard Seale, Foursquare's master blender and distiller; Papa Jules, Mahiki co-founder; and Bruce Perry of Marussia Beverages. The five finalists on stage at RumFest also included Voodoo Room Edinburgh's Lachlan Rooney, Dandelyan's Ronan Collins and Tommaso Cicala of Plateau.
The three finalists have all won a night out courtesy of Marussia Beverages with Ameye and Riley heading to Barbados in May next year.
