It's a small island with a big reputation, and as such it's been announced that Islay might get its tenth whisky distillery courtesy of Elixir Distillers.

Elixir, the company behind the Elements of Islay and Port Askaig brands, has bought land on the outskirts of Port Ellen subject to planning permission, and will be submitting plans soon following a public consultation on the island last night.

Located on the water's edge, on the way to the triumvirate of Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg distilleries, it's a prime position that could be an exciting addition to the local area.

'Some of the world's most exciting drams come from Islay,' said Elixir Distillers co-founder Sukhinder Singh. 'Their unique style combined with the special character of the island meant there was never any question that we wouldn't choose Islay to build our distillery. As soon as I saw the distillery site I fell in love with it. It's on the holy grail of whisky roads, passing Laphroaig, Lagavulin and Ardbeg distilleries on the way to Kidalton Cross. Plus it's in the town of Port Ellen, which as a collector of Port Ellen single malt, has a special meaning. It was just too good to resist.'
