Following the success of the 2017 competition and with a brand new look, the Sommelier Wine Awards 2018 has opened for entries, and promises to deliver the on-trade with the very best wines available to them

Entering its twelfth year, the Sommelier Wine Awards (SWA) is calling for entries from Merchants and Producers around the world who want to sell their wines to restaurants, bars, pubs and hotels in the UK.

The competition is focused entirely on the wines and needs of the on-trade with a judging panel reflecting its ethos. Judged by top UK sommeliers and wine buyers, SWA’s list of tasters are some of the most influential in the UK wine trade, ensuring the competition sets a benchmark for wine lists across the country each year.

In 2017, the competition saw 120 sommeliers and buyers judge just under 3,000 wines from 29 countries, while the annual SWA Gold Book of medal-winners was sent to more than 12,000 UK on-trade buyers, as well as specialist independent wine merchants.

Judges in 2017 included global wine list consultant Annette Scarfe MW, Laurent Richet MS from Restaurant Sat Bains with Rooms, Sunaina Sethi from JKS Restaurants, Laure Patry from Jason Atherton Group and of course SWA’s Head of Judging, Christine Parkinson, head of wine for the global Hakkasan Group.

Competition director Chris Losh comments: ‘SWA is a simple idea: a competition of on-trade wines, judged by top on-trade wine buyers.  As a competition it’s incredibly obvious what it’s all about –and we’ve stayed true to that central ethos all the way down the line – the reason the trade buy into it, and that it keeps growing in popularity. Of course, the bigger it gets, the more sommelier judges we need, but that’s a nice challenge to have!’

Entries must be submitted online by 24 January 2018. Judging takes place in February and March. Results will be announced in May 2018 and all winning wines will feature in the annual Gold Book distributed with the Summer issue of Imbibe. Full details on the competition and how to enter can be found at sommelierwineawards.com.
