A health and wellness initiative aimed at hospitality workers has been launched in the UK. Consisting of events, practical workshops and a consultancy service for employers, the project will be fronted by a website, heathyhospo.com, offering free information, advice and support for everyone in the hospitality trade.

The not-for-profit enterprise was conceived by Tim Etherington-Judge, who spoke exclusively to Imbibe before the launch. Previously global brand ambassador for Bulleit American whiskey, Etherington-Judge was inspired to create Healthy Hospo following a mental breakdown and subsequent recovery.

A team of professionals including former bartenders, global brand ambassadors and experts in mental health, nutrition, personal fitness, yoga and pilates, will be working alongside Etherington-Judge to create the holistic platform. Their aim is to creative a supportive online community and build a healthier, happier and more productive hospitality industry.

‘In 2016 I had a very personally traumatic time but I wanted to take this experience and turn it into something positive,’ said Etherington-Judge. ‘Healthy Hospo will seek to improve the health and wellness of hospitality professionals throughout the industry through preventative measures enabling them to lead healthier, happier working lives and build more sustainable careers.

‘I also hope that by doing this we will also benefit business owners, helping them build a healthier workforce resulting in increased profitability, staff retention and reduced lost days to sickness,’ he added.

The first Healthy Hospo event will take place on the 15 January 2018 in London. The day long workshop will offer a mixture of TED-style seminars and practical classes in health, fitness and mindfulness. Seminars will cover diverse topics including: ‘how to cure a hangover’, ‘meditation for everyone’ and ‘how running saved my life’ with ultra-endurance runner Luke Tyburski.

The event is open to all hospitality professionals and tickets can be reserved on the Healthy Hospo website.

The hospitality industry is seen as one of the unhealthiest industries in the world, encouraged by a ‘work hard play hard’ ethos. However wellness is becoming an increasingly important topic for both employees and employers as Imbibe recently discovered. Variable healthcare and insurance, plus a culture of hourly or tip-based pay means that paid sick-leave is rare, with few organised industry unions supporting the rights and wellbeing of workers.
