One of Europe’s most successful ever golfers, Sir Nick Faldo, has teamed up with Berkshire wine merchant Milton Sandford to launch a range of wines aimed specifically at the on-trade.
The Faldo European Tour Collection features six wines, one for each ‘major’ that Faldo won in his career. In the 1980s and 1990s, as well as being World Number One for 98 weeks, Faldo also won three British Opens and three Masters tournaments.
The range comprises a Rioja from Bodegas Baigorri; a Barolo from Paolo Monti; a Sauvignon de Touraine from Domaine de la Renaudie; a Chablis from Jean-Marc Brocard; a Valpolicella from le Tobele and a Berthet Rayne Châteauneuf du Pape.
Trade prices range from £6.85 for the Sauvignon to £32 for the Barolo. ‘They’re not more expensive because they have Nick Faldo’s name on them,’ said Debbie Kerr, MD of Milton Sandford. ‘They have to be competitive on price and style.’
Faldo – described by Kerr as a ‘food and wine lover with eclectic tastes’ – has not been involved with making the wines, though in some cases he selected the final wine from a range of blends presented to him.
‘These will clearly work for restaurants and for gifting, but wider than that we consider these to be serious restaurant wines,’ said Kerr.
