Eight years in the making, the new rye whiskey is made using 100% malted wholegrain rye and is distilled in Scottish-style pot stills
With the Finnish signature ingredient of rye at its heart, this Malt Rye Whisky from the mavericks at Kyrö is the result of eight years of planning and has already been scored Gold Outstanding (98/100) from the International Wine & Spirit Competition (IWSR).
Made using 100% malted wholegrain rye and distilled in Scottish-style pot stills, the liquid is double pot distilled and matured in new American white oak casks.
‘You never know how the reaction is going to be when you do things differently in a traditional industry such as whisky,’ said head distiller Kalle Valkonen. 'We’re not from Scotland and we don’t play golf. Why should we make whisky the same way it’s done there? Finland might not have much whisky tradition. But we know our rye and grow it to be extremely delicious.'
Imbibe’s reaction is a wholly positive one. Arriving in the distillery’s trademark slick and premium packaging, on the nose, the whisky displays notes of caramel, vanilla and dried fruits (sultanas and prunes) while on the palate, an unmistakable and delicious presence of rye bread with a lasting hit of pepper on the finish.
The whisky is limited to 240 bottles in the UK in 2020, with more to come in 2021.
