You know a new bar is in good hands when the pair behind it both have Callooh Callay on their CVs. So a certain standard can be assumed of Horatio Street Social Club, from Simon Thompson and Jake O’Brien Murphy.
Located in a dark basement below The Nelson’s Head on, you guessed it, Horatio Street in East London, the aim is to provide what they describe as ‘world class drinks’ with ‘neighbourhood vibes’.
The drinks list, with house cocktails at an accessible £9, and a wine list by War on Terroir, will change regularly. The physical menu itself will change on a monthly basis.
An example from the cocktail list is Dirty Faces, combining beeswax, calvados, gin, apricot and verjus – a twist on the classic Angel Face. Kill The Cook, meanwhile, consists of tequila, red pepper, urfa chilli, red iron and lime, for a new take on the Tommy’s Margarita.
Thompson and Murphy worked together at Callooh, where the former was GM from October 2014, after two years at Be At One. Murphy, meanwhile, moved to Callooh from 81LTD in Liverpool.
In soft launch now, with an official opening date of 15 February, this is just the first in what Thompson and Murphy plan to be a number of Social Club venues, with more planned for the UK later in the year.
