Galliano is making a play for the aperitivo moment, previewing its entry into the amaro category, L'Aperitivo, this week in Bristol.
Made with ingredients such as chinotto, bergamot and rhubarb, there's plenty of bergamot freshness on the nose, combining with complex herbal notes – it contains more than 30 herbs and spices. The palate has a good whack of bitterness along with some balanced sweetness, giving it a substantial mouthfeel and a noticeably long finish. There's plenty of character here for it to stand out in a long drink with tonic, for example.
The liquid has been created together with Ago Perrone of the Connaught Bar (you might have heard of it... recently named best bar in the world?), where it's been on the back bar for a while now. On Wednesday, Maxxium used the occasion of Bols Business Class in Bristol to preview the new product in various cocktails.
Perrone and Giorgio Bargiani, also from the Connaught, presented a number of complex serves, one using sesame-infused tequila, agave chia water, bergamot sherbet made with stevia, and Galliano L'Aperitivo. Another combined the new product with cocoa-butter-washed vodka, milk oolong, orange juice and green mandarin essence.
Held in a number of cities worldwide every year, Bols Business Class is a one-day forum aimed at bar owners and operators. In addition to the Connaught team, other speakers included The Cocktail Trading Co's Elliot Ball, The Dark Horse founder and former Hendrick's ambassador Louis Lewis-Smith, and Imbibe's own Clinton Cawood.
Galliano L'Aperitivo is currently being trialled in selected cities in the UK.
