Glen Moray has unveiled three new limited edition ‘wine-finish’ expressions for its 2020 Distillery Edition release

The three new whiskies – Chardonnay Cask, Burgundy Cask and Chenin Blanc Cask – have been laid down between 2003 and 2004 in ex-wine barrels and left to mature for 16 to 17 years.

They were then bottled at cask strength, non-chill filtered and with natural colour.

Chardonnay Cask (58.9% abv) is fruity and spicy, showing notes of toffee, vanilla, toast, roasted plum, ground pepper and pineapple on the nose. The palate is slightly tannic, with dark berry jam flavours, butter, liquorice root and coffee.

Burgundy Cask (60.1% abv) is instead tasty and nutty. The nose has aromas of vanilla, butter, stone fruit and morello cherry. The palate is intense, with more flavours of cherry and toast, a hint of grassiness, almost balsamic, minty. Bread crust dominates the mid-palate while the finish is refreshingly saline.

Chenin Blanc Cask (60.3% abv) is the fruitiest of the trio, with fresh notes of apple, peach, apricot, chamomile flowers and cinnamon spice. The palate is comforting, offering flavours of bread crust, brioche, ginger, wood, tropical fruit and just a hint of liquorice.

The Distillery Edition range, which is usually only available to the distillery’s visitors, has been made available through a ‘dial-in’ service to help people who can’t currently visit the venue access the range.

The service offers ‘personal phone consultations’ where the Glen Moray team, led by brand ambassador and distillery visitor centre manager Iain Allan, guide guests through the whiskies.

‘For the many people who would normally make the trip and take away one of these special bottles, we wanted to find a way to make the range available but avoid making it just a basic transaction over email or the internet,’ said Allan.

RRP £85/700ml, Glen Moray, 01343 550900 (9am-5pm)
