Glenmorangie Astar returns to market

09 August 2017

It's been almost a decade since Glenmorangie created Astar, a single malt whisky matured in bespoke oak casks from the Ozark mountains of Missouri. And today, Glenmorangie Astar returns with a limited-edition release.

Made from 'slow-growth' oak trees picked for their porous structure, the staves are cut to the distillery's exact specifications, and then left to season in the open air for at least two years to soften.

After being coopered into oak casks, they were filled with bourbon, set aside for four years, emptied, shipped to Scotland and filled with Glenmorangie's spirit.

Since the success of its first release, Glenmorangie’s director of distilling, whisky creation & whisky stocks, Dr Bill Lumsden, has wanted to revisit the spirit.

According to Glenmorangie, the casks designed to such precise specifications require years to create, and it has taken Dr Bill almost a decade to orchestrate the whisky’s return.

The 2017 limited-edition is a slightly lower strength (52.5% abv) and is said to have rich, sweet aromas with fresh bright floral top notes. The mouth-feel is also described by the guys at Glenmorangie as being deliciously smooth, rich and creamy, with crème-brulée, tropical and stone fruit flavours.

'At Glenmorangie we are always searching for perfection – and Astar’s first release, entirely matured in our designer casks, was a momentous step on our journey,' said Dr Bill.

'I’m delighted to be able to share the 2017 release with more single malt lovers – and to celebrate with them the whisky’s wonderfully creamy, spicy aromas and silky tastes of soft fruit smothered with vanilla custard.'

But don't all rush at once, as the liquid will only be available to purchase from September.
