Two champagne houses have launched new organic cuvées. A sign of the ongoing commitment towards sustainability in the region, Lanson and Canard-Duchêne are the latest maisons to release certified organic labels.

Lanson Green Label (RRP £49.99) is made from organic grapes grown on an estate vineyard at Verneuil in the Marne Valley. Production follows ‘a strict ecological logic’ according to the house, with lightweight bottles and labels made from recycled paper.

A blend of 50% Pinot Noir, 30% Meunier and 20% Chardonnay, it’s aged for three years before release. A non-malo style, it’s fresh and fruity, with persistent bubbles. Notes of citrus, pear and peach on the nose, are followed by more pears and a tropical mango hint on the palate over a firm mineral core.

Canard-Duchêne’s Parcelle 181 (RRP £37.99) is made from grapes grown on 12 hectares (ha) of organically certified vines, including the 7ha Parcel 181, which is also located in Verneuil.

Partially vinified in oak barrels and aged for almost four years, this extra brut cuvée is a blend of 42% Chardonnay, 36% Meunier and 21% Pinot Noir. It displays bright preserved lemon aromas, notes of warm croissant and a touch of crisp red apple on the nose. The palate combines zesty lemon and grapefruit citrus with more evolved notes of candied peel, a savoury undertone and touch of salinity, with lovely persistent depth of flavour.

This release is a product of a sustainable initiative begun in 2004 by Canard-Duchêne’s cellar master Laurent Fédou. ‘Parcelle 181 opens up new perspectives and encourages organic farming, while at the same time showcasing the excellence of our champagnes,’ he commented.
