Former star sommelier Bruno Murciano and the 25 wineries of his de Vinos company are to join boutique UK importer H2Vin.
Murciano won Best Sommelier of Spain in 2008 and worked at Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons and the Ritz before joining Bibendum as prestige accounts manager. He has spent the last five years working his own small vineyard in Utiel-Requena and setting up his own importing business, de Vino, specialising in Spanish wines.. but found it difficult to commit the time to his agency business.
‘He asked us if we’d take on his wineries, but we want him with us as well,’ said Matt Wilkin, director of H2Vin. ‘He knows the wines backwards.’
The de Vinos range of 25 wineries includes some truly excellent small producers and is a powerful addition to H2Vin’s range. They include the 100-Parker point winery Perez Barquero (Montilla-Moriles), Luna Beberide (Bierzo), Carmelo Rodero (Ribera del Duero), Trico (Rias Baixas) and David Sampedro Gil (Rioja).
‘These are regarded properties in Spain if you are in the know,’ said H2Vin’s director, Matt Wilkin MS. ‘They are definitely somm wines.’
The move, which takes the number of wineries in the H2Vin portfolio from 177 to 202, with over 600 wines, is part of Wilkin’s strategy to ‘take the company to the next stage’.
‘Bruno’s got all these fantastic connections in the Spanish on-trade,’ said Wilkin. ‘We weren’t interested in having these wineries unless he joined us too.’
