Heineken has become the latest brewer to announce plans to cut plastic from its multi-pack cans by replacing it with eco-friendly cardboard toppers.
The company said it will remove plastic rings and shrink wrapping from its entire portfolio of beer and cider multi-packs. Heineken claims the initiative will remove 517 tonnes of plastic annually from the supply chain.
The move is part of a £22m investment to implement cardboard ‘toppers’. The investment will be split between Heineken’s Manchester, Tadcaster and Hereford sites.
This innovation will be rolled out across Heineken, Foster’s and Kronenbourg 1664 multi-pack cans from April 2020, followed by all brands in multi-pack cans, including Strongbow, Bulmer’s and John Smith’s by the end 2021.
Cindy Tervoort, UK marketing director, Heineken, said: ‘After years in development and huge investment, we’re extremely pleased to announce our recyclable and compostable topper innovation, a significant milestone in our journey to eliminate all single-use plastic.’
Heinken’s initiative follows similar moves by other brewers. Last year, Carlsberg announced plans to remove plastic from multi-pack cans, instead joining them together with glue spots.
