The House of Suntory Whisky introduces Yamazaki Mizunara 2017 edition

15 September 2017

Specialist Japanese whisky bars take note: Suntory has announced the release of The Yamazaki Mizunara 2017 Edition.

Blended from a selection of single malt whiskies aged entirely in mizunara casks for at least 18 years, the mizunara is said to be the distillery's 'most exquisite creation yet', being spicy, intense and uniquely Japanese.

Mizunara, a rare Japanese oak, is only found in a few regions in Japan. Permeable and hard, the wood is said to be difficult to use in cask making, and it imparts a spicy characteristic to the whisky only after a long ageing process. Suntory describes the whisky as having an incense-like flavour of sandalwood and aloe wood, the quintessential 'mizunara-ness'.

'I wanted to reveal the whisky’s soul that is the art of mizunara, a heightened sense and awakened palate, engaged through aromas and flavours never known before,' said chief blender Shinji Fukuyo on the liquid. 'Encountering it should be a moment of epiphany.'

The Yamazaki Mizunara 2017 Edition is presented in a wooden box made from recycled Suntory casks and will be available to purchase from 3 October.
