Hailed as the world’s first Afro- Caribbean rum, Equiano has officially launched and is available to the on-trade. With no additives, no added sugar, spices or colourants, the premium liquid is a blend of aged molasses rum from Bajan producer Foursquare and Mauritius’ Gray’s Distillery.

Equiano tasting notes from Ian Burrell

On the nose Like any quality premium rum, Equiano subtly delivers tropical warmth as soon as its aroma touches your nose. Rich, notes of dried fruits such as raisins and sultanas combine with sweet toffee, butterscotch and caramel culminating with a suggestion of orange peel, vanilla and buttered wood.

On the palate Delivers all the natural sweet notes of a well-aged rum from American white oak ex-bourbon casks. It has a warm toffee and butterscotch mouth-feel, with chewy raisins and brown sugar flavours that emerge from the liquid as it caresses your tongue.

To finish Although Equiano is a naturally sweet rum with no added sugar or spices, it has a medium to sweet ending with touches of oak, anise, sweet pepper with a hint of bitter orange peel.

As well as being a product of two distilleries on two different continents, Equiano has also been conceived by two key figures within the drinks, and more specifically rum, industry. Global rum ambassador Ian Burrell and Foursquare’s master distiller Richard Seale have worked hard to create this already award-winning rum which blends together the flavours and characteristics of both the Eastern and Western Hemispheres.

‘Premium rum is on the rise, and more importantly the consumer that wants quality is demanding clarity, authenticity and intrinsic value in their rum,’ says Burrell of the rum category. ‘Equiano is a new style of rum, one that combines two rum cultures… African and the Caribbean. An unadulterated rum that is best appreciated the way that YOU like to drink your spirits. Neat, on the rocks, with your favourite mixer or in a cocktail.’

Equiano starts its journey at Gray's Distillery in Mauritius, where fresh molasses are barrelled for 10 years in a combination of French Limousin oak and cognac casks. It is then blended with award-winning rum from Foursquare which has been barrelled in American white oak (formally matured bourbon) casks. Aged for a minimum of eight years and cultivated in two different tropical climates also means Equiano matures at a far faster rate than many other dark spirits.

Equiano is now ready to pre-order and will be available from January 2020.
