Jancis Robinson MW is branching out from writing with a new project in the world of design. But not to worry – the renowned critic and journalist isn’t straying far from her wine-tinged roots.

Instead she's putting her wine expertise to work, collaborating with product designer Richard Brendon to create a glassware collection for use in both venues and homes.

Dubbed The 1 Collection, Robinson and Brendon's joint effort is comprised of a wine glass, a water glass and two decanters.

So what caused Robinson to venture into vessels?

‘I was looking for the perfect wine glass,’ she said.

‘On my travels around the world of wine, it has become really noticeable in the last few years that producers of champagne and other sparkling wines, as well as those making sherry, port and other fortified wines, want their liquids to be appreciated in just the same way as table wines.’

Thus, she and Brendon set out to come up with a glass that would suit many different types of wine. According to the designer, the most challenging part of the process was perfecting the weight of the glass.

‘We went through many rounds of prototypes, which Jancis and I reviewed together, to ensure we delivered a final product that met every single one of our requirements perfectly,’ explains Brendon.

The result is a wine glass that claims versatility as its unique selling point. Its long stem is said to be ideal for swirling, and its curvature is meant to maximise the wine’s surface area without allowing its aroma to escape.

The other pieces in the collection are just as preciously designed. The stemless water glass has the same curvature as the wine glass, so it can also be used for wine and the two decanters are made to be used for young and old wines, respectively.
