The Bacardí Legacy 2017 Northern European winners were announced at a party in London last night, with Joe Harper from the Gleneagles Hotel named the winner for the UK.
The assistant bar manager beat Ben Alcock from Her Majesty's Secret Service in Bristol, Blind Pig's Dan Berger, Chris Edwards from Filter + Fox in Liverpool, Roisin McErlean of Rita's in Belfast and Geoff Robinson of Satan's Whiskers for the chance to compete in the global final, which will be in Berlin next year.
The format of the competition sees entrants create a drink containing Bacardí and promoting it with the aim of it becoming a classic cocktail, in the same arena as such drinks as the Mojito and the Daiquiri.
Harper's Legacy drink is named Pilar after Ernest Hemingway's boat, and is a twist on the Airmail and Missionary's Downfall cocktails, a lightly spritzed and refreshing affair with good depth of flavour.
The event was the best Bacardí Legacy party held in the UK to date, bringing all the northern Europe finalists to London, where they all ran small bars serving their Legacy cocktails. It was a brilliant opportunity for everyone to come together, taste each other's drinks and celebrate the success of all involved. Here's hoping they keep the format in coming years...
