Krug has launched the latest Édition of its rosé cuvée – the 21st since the expression was first bottled in 1983.

The release marks the extension of the luxury champagne house’s Édition concept – whereby each Krug Grande Cuvée release is allocated a number – to its rosé cuvée.

Krug Rosé 21ème Édition is based on the 2008 harvest – a year of mixed weather including a mild winter, overcast spring and cool summer, plus a severe hailstorm that impacted the village of Sainte-Gemme, a hotspot for Pinot Meunier.

But fine weather in September persisted through the harvest, rescuing the year and providing healthy, ripe grapes.

‘The year’s Chardonnay wines revealed an unusual suppleness and expression of fruit, while the Pinot Noirs were characterful and bold, with a lively finish,’ said Krug cellar master Eric Lebel.

‘As feared, the hailstorm did indeed leave its mark on the Meuniers. Fortunately, Krug’s extensive library of reserve wines held a number of Meuniers from different years, a selection of which lent their vibrant notes of fruit and tension to the blend.

‘Pinot Noirs from plots in Ambonnay, Mareuil-sur-Aÿ and Aÿ enhanced its body and expression with their intense fruit character. Finally, a red wine from the house’s plot in Aÿ imparted an enchanting colour, length and spiciness.’

The final blend is made up of 57 wines, spanning harvests from 2000 to 2008, and includes 51% Pinot Noir (of which 10% was macerated as red wine), 41% Chardonnay and 8% Pinot Meunier.

Krug has also unveiled a new Krug Rosé glass, developed in association with Riedel – described as ‘a graceful, ultra-light, mouth-blown design’.

It incorporates a fan-like shape on the inside of the glass, giving a larger surface area to accentuate the Champagne’s aromas and flavours.

In September, we caught up with Olivier Krug on the house's latest release, its 2004 vintage champagne, and the importance of the on-trade.
