Leon Back of Panda & Sons wins Bacardi Legacy Scottish heat

20 October 2017

It's that time of year again, as the regional heats for the Bacardi Legacy cocktail competition are in full swing across the country.

Leon Back from Panda & Sons in Edinburgh came out on top at the Scottish heat which took place at the Voodoo Rooms.

As you may know, the aim is to create the next classic cocktail that will stand the test of time, and Back impressed judges with his The Queen Street cocktail, made with Bacardi Carta Blanca, lemon juice, sugar, Martini Riserva Speciale Ambrato, celery bitters with a spritz of Islay whisky.

After a deliberation that took nearly an hour, The Bon Vivant's Bettina Kovacs was named runner-up.

'Scotland is such an exciting region with a thriving cocktail culture that is constantly growing and evolving,' said Metinee Kongsrivilai, UK brand ambassador for Bacardi rums. 'We were delighted to see so many entries from bartenders representing their hometown here.

'Leon won due to his engaging stage performance with a story that was a tribute to the industry and the region. But what the judges loved the most was the incredibly delicious and well-balanced drink that Leon presented which also had a unique Scottish twist.'

What's next for Back? He will compete in the UK final in November in Amsterdam, facing five other finalists from across the country for a place in the global final. The 10th global final will take place in Mexico City, home to one of Bacardi's distilleries, in May 2018.

With Belfast and Edinburgh heats done and dusted, it's now onto Liverpool and London...
