Leading merchant Liberty Wines has been appointed UK agent for Valdeorras winery Rafael Palacios, formerly traded by Fields Morris & Verdin
Since establishing his own winery in 2004, winemaker Rafael Palacios has made a name for himself thanks to his work on the Godello grape variety.
Located in western Galicia’s Valdeorras region, and specifically in the Val do Bibei subzone, Palacios’ 32 parcels of Godello cover 19.5ha of land. Palacios' winemaking style results in wines showing 'great intensity' and a 'judicious use of oak'.
‘We are excited to be working with Rafael Palacios, who has succeeded in bringing Godello to the world’s attention over the past 16 years,’ said David Gleave MW, managing director of Liberty Wines. ‘Strengthening our Spanish portfolio has been a priority for us over the past couple of years, so Rafa’s move to join us is an important step forward. It is now our job to build upon the excellent job done with his wines by Fields Morris & Verdin.’
Before opening his winery in Valdeorras, Palacios studied in Bordeaux between 1990 and 1993, where he also worked with the Mouiex family. He then worked the 1994 vintage with John Cassegrain in Australia and subsequently he was at Rouge Homme in Coonawarra. Upon his return to Spain in 1994, Palacios began working at the family winery until he decided to fly solo in 2004, four years after his father’s death.
