For decades, Licor 43 has been served with coffee, but this year the brand is taking this classic pairing to a whole new level. Now in its third year, the 2019 edition of the Licor 43 Bartenders & Baristas Challenge sees bartenders and baristas team up to create coffee cocktails using this Spanish liqueur, with its secret family recipe of 43 natural ingredients.

There’s good reason for the focus on coffee, and not only because of the complementary floral, citrus and other botanical notes shared between coffee and this liqueur. Soon after Licor 43’s launch in 1946, it was already being served with coffee at Café Asiático in Cartagena and Café Barraquito in Tenerife.

Winning teams from regional heats in London, Edinburgh and Liverpool will be competing for a shot at the global final in Gran Canaria this autumn.

Members of the winning duo will earn themselves a professional course each, worth up to £1,350 per person. Follow Licor 43 on social media @Licor43UK

‘There is a natural marriage of aromas and flavours between Licor 43 and coffee and we’ve been communicating this with our Carajillo 43 signature serve,’ comments UK brand manager Charlotte Oswald.

‘We are often amazed at the creativity, knowledge and passion from contestants and this really went up a level with the introduction of the coffee element last year – bartenders who are very well-versed in all things spirits are finding a whole new world of cocktail creation. We can’t wait to see what they come up with this year!’

Last year, mixologist Will Crawshaw and barista Joshua Neale of Tattu in Leeds took the top spot in the UK with their impressive Secrets of the Silk Road cocktail.

Denmark emerged triumphant in the global final, with bartender Søren Krogh Sørensen and barista Jonas Gehl creating a textured combination of Licor 43 Original, grapefruit juice, orange bitters, Canary Island honeyed rum and espresso, with a juniper and grapefruit spray, entitled Skalud.

Expect even more inventive serves as this year’s teams explore this natural affinity between coffee and Licor 43.

Don’t miss the UK final of the Licor 43 Bartenders & Baristas Team-Up 2019 at Imbibe Live on 2 July at 11.15am in the Cocktail Lounge.
