Bermondsey-based The London Distillery Company (TLDC) has launched a whisky called 109 Cask Edition, which it says is the first single malt to be distilled in London in a century. The launch follows TLDC's release of its Rye Whiskey LV-1767 last year, which it claimed as the first whiskey distilled in the capital in 100 years.

Most of Cask 109's raw materials originated as brewing ingredients. The malt is 100% Plummage Archer, a rare variety of organic barley, and was supplied to the distillery by Stroud Brewery in Gloucestershire. The Plummage Archer malt was created in 1914, and accounted for 80% of all brewing and distilling in the 1960s; it’s believed to be a parent of the Maris Otter, popular among British brewers today.

The wort was then fermented with two types of yeast: TLDC’s own 1920s Distiller and Whitbread B, a common brewing strain from yeast specialist Surebrew in Surrey.

The resulting beer was double distilled and, on 9 September 2015, placed in small, 20-litre American oak barrels which previously hosted Kings County Bourbon. After three years of barrel ageing, the minimum required to make a single malt, the whisky was bottled at a cask strength of 63.5% abv.

According to TLDC, 109 Cask Edition has aromas of mango and brioche, with hints of raspberry jam and candied orange. Spicy flavours characterise the palate.

109 Cask Edition joins TLDC’s diverse lineup of spirits, which includes a variety of gins (Dodd’s and Kew ranges), a horseradish vodka and the Rye Whiskey LV-1767 Edition.
